Interviewing Techniques and Tips

PUTTING YOUR BEST SELF FORWARD AND GETTING THE JOB

Interviewing Techniques and Tips
Interviewing for a job is a nerve-wracking ordeal for many people. You may feel uncomfortable “selling” yourself or fielding unexpected questions. Or maybe the prospect of having to meet and impress new people is enough to trigger your anxiety. The good news is that interviewing is a skill you can learn. With the right tips and techniques—and plenty of practice—you can become a master of sharing your value with potential employers and presenting yourself effectively.

Interviewing techniques tip 1: Interview for as many jobs as you can

Interview for as many jobs as you canLet's assume you have focused your search on certain types of jobs and types of employers. You have developed a preferred list of both. You have scanned the horizon, conducted research, compiled your questions, and engaged your network for assistance. Your resume is in order.
Then job openings start to pop up through your web searches and referrals. Some seem close but others don’t quite fit. You quickly skip over those jobs that are "beneath" you, have titles that appear to be foreign, or are in fields or industries you’re unfamiliar with. You have decided to be focused and only apply for positions that exactly match your search criteria.
But limiting your job search limits the possibilities. Once you create too many filters and requirements, you can easily overlook opportunities. In this type of market you have to get out there and actively uncover opportunities. Don't dismiss opportunities to interview based upon superficial and narrow criteria. You never know when an interview for a “not-quite-right” job will result in a surprising match, a referral to another opening, or an entirely new position tailored to fit your unique experience and abilities.

Why you should interview as much as possible:

  • You need the practice. Some of you have not interviewed for a while. You need to refine your story and you can only do that through practice. That means interviewing as much as you can.
  • Interviewing will refine your job search. By getting out there and interviewing, you’ll learn about new trends, positions, and opportunities, your perspective will shift, and you’ll see new paths that you were previously unaware of.
  • Interviewing will make your network stronger. As you engage your network for interview referrals and recommendations, you will not only strengthen existing connections, but you’ll meet new people who are connected to your network.
  • Interviewing may lead to unexpected opportunities. If you have the skills and impress in the interview, that carries weight in the organization. Employers want to place good people and may even refer you to opportunities outside of the firm.

Interviewing techniques tip 2: Develop a compelling story

We tend to conclude that our lives are pretty much the same as other people's, that they’re average and boring. As a result, many people don’t tell their own story well. But your story is so much better than you think. The way your life has evolved; the things you’ve learned; your achievements, failings, and dreams—these things are unique to you and much more interesting than you realize. Sharing your well thought out story is a powerful interviewing technique.
Your story is what helps people understand who you are and where you are going. So learn to tell your story and tell it well, especially for interviewing and networking purposes. Putting together your story takes a lot of work and practice. However, the benefits to you and to your career are enormous. Your stories:
  • Give you confidence
  • Increase your self-awareness
  • Bring humanity to your resume
  • Make you memorable and set you apart

Developing your story for job interviews

  • Take a comprehensive inventory of the chapters of your life. Think about major events, memories, and turning points that shaped who you are. Make notes about your feelings, expectations, and frustrations, or what you learned, accomplished, and experienced. Organize your chapters by time periods or jobs.
  • Focus on memorable “aha” moments. These stories need to have vivid dimensions so people will experience that moment with you. It may have been a moment with your mom on the porch, or a trip you took to a far away place, or what a boss or mentor told you. The stories don’t have to be dramatic, just meaningful to you.
  • Uncover the themes in your story. What emerges as your passion? Mentoring others, doing research, helping a specific type of client, advancing knowledge in your field? What gives you joy? Are you a teacher, a leader, an entrepreneur, a risk taker?
  • Reflect on your career path. How have you arrived where you are today? Why did you make certain choices? Who helped you along the way? What motivated you then and now? Have your career goals remained the same or have they changed? Are you someone who likes new projects? Or executes the details of someone else's vision?

Practice makes perfect

Once you’ve developed your story, the next step is to practice telling it—saying it out loud, ideally to others. Don’t wait until the interview to tell it for the first time. Try reciting it into a tape recorder or sharing it with a confidante for feedback. Get over your feelings of story inadequacy or thinking that a job well done speaks for itself.
As you become more comfortable in how to tell your story, you will see that your life has not just been a string of random events. Your story has a past and it has a future and the road ahead becomes clearer when you understand where you have been. The ultimate test will be the next time someone says, "Tell me about yourself."

Interviewing techniques tip 3: Tailor your story to the job

Tailor your story to the jobApplying your story to a specific employer or job is the next step. Lining up the stories that apply to the opportunity at hand is critical. Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes and pose the questions you would ask. Which stories are relevant to this job interview? Think about personal stories that show how you handled change, made choices under pressure, or learned lessons from mistakes and failures. You should also think about stories you can tell in the interview that reveal your skill set.
Learning and appreciating your story is a prerequisite to any interview process. Don’t rely on your ability to think on your feet. Anticipate the questions and have answers at the ready. In the end, this is about making a great and memorable impression that demonstrates competency and ability.

You may want to start by developing your stories around these areas:

  • State times where you either made money or saved money for your current or previous company.
  • Focus on a crisis or two in your life or job and how you responded or recovered from it.
  • A time where you functioned as a part of a team and what that contribution was.
  • A time in your career or job where you had to deal with stress.
  • A time in your job where you provided successful leadership or a sense of direction.
  • The failures you faced in your job and how you overcame them.
  • The seminal events that happened during your career that caused you to change direction and how that worked out for you.
If you’re having trouble developing a good interviewing story, ask your friends or family members for their own success stories. Notice the elements that make them work, such as specific details and a smooth flow. Notice elements that don’t work, such as vagueness or rambling. Then think about your own experience and try to uncover the moments when you really excelled or when you rose to meet a challenge. After you identify several, practice them until they flow easy and work on adapting them to different types of questions.

Interviewing techniques tip 4: Be prepared

Interviews range from conversations lasting a few minutes to several formal meetings, sometimes with more than one interviewer. Interviews allow you to demonstrate that you are the right candidate for the job, but you are not alone if interviews make you nervous. The better prepared you are, the more comfortable you will be when the questions start coming your way.

Job interview preparation tips:

  • Do your research. Gather information about the company and the position available. Try to specifically relate your experience to the duties the job opportunity entails.
  • Practice interviewing. Enlist a friend (better yet, a group of friends and colleagues) to ask you sample questions. Practice making eye contact.
  • Record your practice sessions. Pay attention to body language and verbal presentation. Eliminate extra movements and verbal fillers, like “uh,” and “um.”
  • Handle logistics early. Have your clothes, resume, and directions to the interview site ready ahead of time, to avoid any extra stress.

Don’t forget about your references

Don’t let your references be the last to know about your job search, or even worse, get an unexpected call from a potential employer. Many offers are withdrawn over bad references. Why take that chance? Get in touch with your references right away to seek help and to avoid surprises on either side.
  • Are your references relevant to your current job search? Who should you add or subtract?
  • Are there any reference gaps? Gaps that an employer will question? What is your story about those gaps?
  • Can a colleague, vendor, customer, or board member be added to replace or enhance the list?
  • What is the current status of your relationship with your references?

Interviewing techniques tip 5: Anticipate likely questions

To get to the motivations and working style of a potential employee, employers often turn to behavioral interviewing, an interviewing style which consists of a series of probing, incisive questions.
Interviewing techniques tip 5: Anticipate likely questionsSample behavioral interview questions include:
  • Describe a situation in which you didn’t meet your stated goal, how did you handle it?
  • Tell us about a situation in which you encountered resistance from key people, how did you convince the person or people to do what you wanted?
  • Describe a situation in which you took the initiative to change a process or system and make it better, how did you identify the problem? How did you go about instituting change?

Preparing good interview answers

Interviewers will follow up your preliminary answers with further questions about your actions. To prepare for these types of interview questions, the following tips might help:
  • Review your research about the company and the position.
  • Make a list of key attributes for your desired job.
  • Write sample interview questions that are likely to uncover the attributes you identified as important.
  • Create answers to the sample interview questions based on a template such as “Situation – Action – Result” with specific details from your work experience.
  • Practice answering the interview questions and follow-up questions so that you are very familiar with several detailed examples/stories. Rehearse key points.

Learn how to communicate better and have more confidence Learn how to communicate better and have more confidence

Emotional intelligence (EQ) matters just as much as intellectual ability, if not more so, when it comes to work success. EQ helps you communicate clearly, work well with others, roll with problems, defuse conflict, and feel confident socially. Best of all, you can raise your EQ at any time.

Interviewing techniques tip 6: Ask questions during the interview

Being prepared and asking great questions about the position and the employer shows your interest during the interview. You can't just be an effective responder. You need to assert yourself, too. By the time you reach the interviewing stage, you should be clear about what you want and what you offer to the company.
Try to be thoughtful and self-reflective in both your interview questions and your answers. Show the interviewee you know yourself—your strengths and your weaknesses. Be prepared to talk about which areas would present challenges and how you would address them. Admitting true areas of weakness is much more convincing than claiming: "I have what you need and I can do anything I put my mind to."

College Interview Questions

12 Questions You Should Be Ready to Answer in Your College Interview

By , About.com Guide
Most college interview questions are meant to help you and the interviewer find out if the college is a good match for you. Rarely will you get a question that puts you on the spot or tries to make you feel stupid. Remember, the college is trying to make a good impression too. Use the interview to show off your personality in ways that aren't possible on the application.
Below are some typical questions and some suggestions for answering them. When you've mastered them, check out these 20 more interview questions. Also be sure to avoid these10 common interview mistakes.

1. Tell me about yourself.

This question seems easier than it is. How do you reduce your whole life to a few sentences? And it's hard to avoid commonplace answers like "I'm friendly" or "I'm a good student." Of course you want to demonstrate that you're friendly and studious, but try also to say something memorable here that really makes you different from other college applicants. Can you hold your breath longer than anyone in your school? Do you have a huge collection of Pez dispensers? Do you have unusual cravings for sushi? Read more tips for this question...

2. Why are you interested in our college?

Be specific when answering this, and show that you've done your research. Also, avoid answers like "I want to make a lot of money" or "Graduates of your college get good job placement." You want to highlight your intellectual interests, not your materialistic desires. What specifically about the college distinguishes it from other schools you're considering?Read more tips on this question...

3. What can I tell you about our college?

You can almost guarantee that your interviewer will provide an opportunity for you to ask questions. Make sure you have some, and make sure your questions are thoughtful and specific to the particular college. Avoid questions like "when is the application deadline?" or "how many majors do you have?" This information is both uninteresting and readily available on the school's webpage. Come up with some probing and focused questions: "What would graduates of your college say was the most valuable thing about their four years here?" "I read that you offer a major in interdisciplinary studies. Could you tell me more about that?" Read more tips on this question...

4. Who in your life has most influenced you?

There are other variations of this question: Who's your hero? What historical or fictional character would you most like to be like? This can be an awkward question if you haven't thought about it, so spend a few minutes considering how you would answer. Identify a few real, historical, and fictional characters you admire, and be prepared to articulate WHY you admire them. Read more tips on this question...

5. Why do you want to major in ______________ ?

Realize that you don't need to have decided upon a major when you apply to college, and your interviewer will not be disappointed if you say you have many interests and you need to take more classes before choosing a major. However, if you have identified a potential major, be prepared to explain why. Avoid saying that you want to major in something because you'll make a lot of money -- your passion for a subject will make you a good college student, not your greed. Read more tips on this question...

6. What will you contribute to our campus community?

You'll want to be specific when answering this question. An answer like "I'm hard-working" is rather bland and generic. Think about what it is that makes you uniquely you. What exactly will you bring to diversify the college's community? Read more tips on this question...

7. Tell me about a challenge that you overcame.

This question is designed to see what kind of problem solver you are. When confronted with a challenge, how do you handle the situation? College will be full of challenges, so the college wants to make sure they enroll students who can handle them. Read more tips on this question...

8. What do you do for fun in your free time?

"Hangin' out and chillin'" is a weak answer for this question. College life obviously isn't all work, so the admissions folks want students who will do interesting and productive things even when they aren't studying. Do you write? hike? play tennis? Use a question such as this one to show that you are well-rounded with a variety of interests. Read more tips on this question...

9. What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?

You don't need to pretend that you have your life figured out if you get a question like this. Very few students entering college could accurately predict their future professions. However, your interviewer does want to see that you think ahead. If you can see yourself doing three different things, say so -- honesty and open-mindedness will play in your favor.Read more tips on this interview question...

10. Does your high school record accurately reflect your effort and ability?

In the interview or on your application, you often have an opportunity to explain a bad grade or a bad semester. Be careful with this issue -- you don't want to come across as a whiner or as someone who blames others for a low grade. However, if you really did have extenuating circumstances, let the college know. Read more tips on this interview question...

11. Recommend a good book to me.

The interviewer is trying to accomplish a few things with this question. First, the question asks whether or not you've actually read much. Second, it asks you to apply some critical skills as you articulate why a book is worth reading. And finally, your interviewer might get a good book recommendation!

12. If you could do one thing in high school differently, what would it be?

A question like this can turn sour if you make the mistake of dwelling on things you regret. Try to put a positive spin on it. Perhaps you've always wondered if you would have enjoyed acting or music. Maybe you would have liked to give the student newspaper a try. Maybe, in retrospect, studying Chinese might have been more in line with your career goals than Spanish. A good answer shows that you didn't have the time in high school to explore everything that is of interest to you.

EAMCET 2011 – EAMCET Tips From Experts – Preparation Plan to Crack EAMCET 2011

    May 4th, 2011No comments
Andhra Pradesh Intermediate results are out and now there is less time for the Aspirants who are going to appear  EAMCET 2011 Entrance Exam, Here are important suggestions for the Aspirants to Crack EAMCET. Aspirants should have a brief Idea on the Subjects that they are Attempting. Another important thing that Aspirants should be noted is EAMCET Rank depends on the marks that they score in EAMCET.
In National Level Entrance Exam like AIEEE, IITJEE Aspirants has maximum time to answer the questions nearly 30 questions per hour. So they don’t need to worry about time Management. But EAMCET Aspirants must and should has grip on the Subjects and Time Management because Aspirant should attempt 55 questions per hour. So EAMCET aspirants should have Speed and Accuracy while writing the Exam. Aspirants must and should focus on shortcuts and direct answers. Students should concentrate on Mock Tests so that they can recheck the Mistake they have done.
EAMCET 2011 - EAMCET Tips From Experts - Preparation Plan to Crack EAMCET 2011
    Intermediate Marks as Weightage:
Like Previous year also 25% weightage will be based on Intermediate Marks and 75% weightage will be based on the Marks that they score in EAMCET. EAMCET marks will decide the Final EAMCET Rank rather than Inter Marks. As per the Analysis 1 mark in EAMCET is Equal to 15 marks in Intermediate. So Experts surely say that Apirants must concentrate on EAMCET to get good Rank in EAMCET.
Students who are Appearing for Engineering Entrance must concentrate on Time management while Attempting the Exam. Medical Students can Attempt 80 Questions in 50 minutes, chemistry Questions in 1 hour so they have Maximum time for Attempting Physics Questions. But Coming to Engineering Aspirants they take 1 hour 15 minutes to attempt 80 questions in Mathematics , one hour for attempting chemistry so they has less time to attempt Physics questions.
As the Time for Appearing EAMCET is less, Aspirants must concentrate on revising the Subject Topic wise and Should Attempt More and More Mock tests so that he can check the Mistakes that had done and will not repeat it in upcoming Exams. Students Appearing EAMCET is Increasing gradually so every students who are writing the Entrance Exam will faces tough Competition. Aspirants target should be an admissions in any one of the Premier Engineering Colleges in Andhra Pradesh so that he can get into any one of that Institutes. Aspirants should score more than 100 marks in EAMCET so that he can get the Branches and Colleges of his Choice

AIEEE 2011 Question paper Analysis – Errors – Cutoff Marks – by Aakash institute

    May 4th, 2011No comments
AIEEE 2011 exam was a 3 hour paper (12 noon to 3.00pm) with 90 questions in total for 360 marks . The order of the subject and the choices were completely jumbled in these 4 versions . There were 4 versions for AIEEE 2011 – P,Q,R,S.Each subject had 30 questions and the pattern was exactly the same for all the subjects. There were 4 choices in all questions. In Physics, there were 3 questions with assertion-reasoning type and no comprehension type. In Maths there were 5 assertion-reasoning type questions and no comprehension. Chemistry did not have any comprehension based or assertion reasoning based questions. Correct answer carried 4 marks and -1 for wrong answers. Physics was quite difficult, chemistry can be put in a level from medium to simple and maths was easy.
AIEEE 2011 Question paper Analysis - Errors - Cutoff Marks - by Aakash institute
Aakash Chaudhry, CEO and Director of Aakash Educational Services Ltd, about the paper pattern, students’ reaction and expected cut offs forAIEEE 2011

Q1. Are you satisfied with the All India Engineering Entrance Exam that was held today? Were there any changes in pattern of questions as compared to last year?
Ans. As the question papers were supposedly leaked, the paper was postponed by three hours. However, the paper was quite satisfactory. The examination had no surprises, and the paper followed the same trend as the last time i.e. 30 questions in each subject, a total of 90 questions constituting 360 as maximum marks. Only difference is that this time all questions carried 4 marks, unlike last year where there were 8 marks questions also, apart from 4 marks questions.
Q2. What is the general reaction of students who took the exam today? Did they find it difficult to crack?
Ans. The students who took this exam heaved a sigh of relief as the paper was comparatively easy as compared to last year.
Q3. Were there any printing errors or discrepancies in AIEEE 2011?
Ans. There have been no printing errors reported so far.
Q4. Sir, on the basis of the exam can you predict the overall and subject-wise cut-offs?
Ans. Predicting the overall AIEEE 2011 cut off is very difficult as this stage. However, going by the general response, Physics was difficult while Maths and Chemistry were not that difficult. Since the AIEEE is used by many institutes in India for their admissions and for each of the affiliated institutes the cut offs are different. Some newly opened and not so well reputed institutes, as compared to NITs, accept students with relatively lower score. However, indicatively it seems that if a student if targeting top engineering collegeslike NITs throughAIEEE then a score above 210 (out of 360) should be able to give a rank under 10000. Similarly, a score of 180-185 should keep the candidate under 20000 rank, a rank of under 40000 should be achieved with a score of 150.
Q5. This year the AIEEE exam was also held in the Online format. However, only 4,904 students registered for it. What is the reason behind this lukewarm response?
Ans. India has still a long way to go before it catches up with west on technology front. Due to several technical glitches that several computer adaptive test had in the last year (eg CAT), the students were apprehensive about taking the examination online.
Q6. What is the minimum number of questions that a student needs to attempt to get an All India rank under 10,000?
Ans. Out of 90, if a student attempts around 55-60 questions right (with a few negative marks), he/she should be able to score an all India rank under 10000.
Q7. What is the minimum All India rank that one can expect to get admission in top engineering colleges like NITs?
Ans. Most of the students under 8000 rank generally opt for IITs over NITs. Therefore based on students’ preference for a specific engineering stream an AIR of under 20000 should get a seat in any of the good NITs. Having said that, if a student wishes a top opt for a top NIT with most popular engineering streams likeComputer Sciences, Electronics, Electrical etc, then he/she should score under AIR 8000.
Q8. Any last message which you would like to give to those students who have failed to do well inAIEEE? What should be their plan of action now?
Ans. Though we admit that there is nothing like failing, a student must realize that it was just a bad day. These words are not meant to console you but to remind you that if you continue to work hard and put in your best, then it really does not matter where you study.

    Career Guidance after 10th

    Career Guidance after 10th

Career is a very integral part of our lives, because our entire lifestyle eventually depends on the kind of career we have. Our growth in life mainly depends on the nature and the success ratio of our career. 10th standard is considered as the foundation base as it gradually shapes the outline of our careers. After the completion of 10th standard, almost every student faces the dilemma as to what should be their next plan of action. Since there are many options that a student can opt for after the completion of 10th standard, many people often remain confused about their course of action.

Basically there are three major streams such as science, commerce, and arts that are available for students after the completion of 10th standard. The choice of selecting a particular stream completely depends on the student. Depending on the marks acquired by a student during the 10th standard and also it is important for the student to select a stream in accordance to his interest. At times many students cannot get into their favorite stream because they have not attained sufficient marks in their 10th standard exams. The marks attained during the 10th standard exams hold a lot of importance because the entry into the 11th standard is mainly done on the basis of these marks. Therefore, it is important to work hard during the 10th standard, so that you can get good marks and eventually get selected into their favorite stream.

After the completion of 10th standard one needs to take some time off and decide about the career path that he wants to follow so that all the other choices can be made accordingly. Decisions related to career should not be taken in a hurry and even the parents should participate in this important process. It is also necessary to remain focused towards one’s career so that they do not get confused with the opinions given by people around them. For students who want to opt for the science stream should have some interests in subjects like physics and mathematics and these subjects are the most important subjects in this stream. After the 10th standard, one can also start preparing for the medical or engineering entrance exams. 10th standard grades are also important for students who want to choose the commerce stream. The career options available after the completion of the 10th standard are diverse and at the end of the day it totally depends on the student as far as selecting the career path is concerned. There are a lot of career counselors who can provide appropriate career options depending on the marks procured by the student for the 10th examinations. Proper guidance by both parents and teachers are necessary for students who are in their 10th standards because it is one of the most crucial milestones in a person’s career. At this age, many people are not adept enough to make mature decisions, which would help them to build their careers; hence they should be given the necessary guidance.
